Hi! My name is Avery Mayhew and I am a Language & International Health
student at Clemson University, graduating in May 2023.I am originally from
Fairfield, Connecticut, where I attended Fairfield Ludlowe High School.
Growing up, I was a very active and adventurous kid. I played a multitude of sports
and was fortunate enough to have parents that loved to travel. In high school,
I discovered that I love working with children and I aim to serve others.
When I first began at Clemson University, I was majoring in Biological Sciences.
I threw onto my schedule a couple of Spanish classes, as I loved my Spanish classes
in high school and always found myself drawn to Spanish culture. It wasn’t until my
second semester of freshman year that I learned about the Language and
International Health program. Immediately I applied to switch majors. The combination
of Spanish classes and public health classes was exactly what I was looking for.
It was an added benefit that I knew from a young age that I wanted to study abroad
while in college, and this program provided exactly that. During my time at Clemson,
I loved each and every one of my LIH classes. I especially enjoyed my Health and the Hispanic Community class, as well as my Infectious Disease class. I also continued taking my Pre-Professional Health Studies prerequisites, as I am looking to continue onto a Physician Assistant Program post-graduation.
My junior year of college I attended the CEA study abroad program in Seville, Spain, where I had an internship in a pediatric emergency room. You can find out more about my experience abroad in the “Study Abroad” tab located on the top of this page. I loved this internship, and it confirmed my desire to work in pediatrics after graduating. I loved being around children and watching them grow from infants into healthy toddlers. I hit a crossroads however, when I found myself with a wonderful internship with Pfizer Inc., in New York City the summer after. At Pfizer, I worked in the Corporate Affairs division to break down barriers to health care and expand access to Pfizer’s products. This role was completely different than any job in the medical field, and I found that I loved doing both! I talked to many doctors at Pfizer and they shared with me why they made the switch from practicing medicine to working in a more corporate environment. After much contemplation, I went back to what high school Avery would think. I am a sociable individual who is passionate about serving others and her community, and loves spending day in and day out with children. I am thankful that I have a public health background, and I think it will aid me as I continue my journey to becoming a Physician Assistant.
After graduation, I hope to work as a Medical Assistant while preparing to apply to PA programs. I am a Certified Nursing Assistant and also certified in Lifeguarding and CPR. I am excited about the future and I cannot wait to see how my degree in Language and International Health has prepared me for upcoming endeavors.
